California Writers Club, Mt. Diablo Branch, Young Writers Contest: Open to all middle school students from Contra Costa County for poems, short stories and essays, four DES students received the following awards:
Eighth grader won 2nd place in Essay
Seventh grader won 3rd place in Essay
Eighth grader won 3rd place in Short Story
Seventh grader won 3rd place in Poetry
Spring 2010

Asian Pacific Fund Essay Contest: Sixth grader placed 2nd competing against over 200 students from the nine bay area counties.

Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center Unity Writing Contest: Four seventh graders made a clean sweep in the middle school division, placing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th out of 216 students from 20 local high schools and middle schools.

Walnut Creek Library Foundation Poetry Contest: Students competed in and were awarded seven of the ten places in the 4th/5th and the 6th – 8th categories:
Grades 6 – 8
Eighth grader won 1st place
Sixth grader won 2nd place
One eighth grader and one sixth grader received Honorable Mention.

Second grader won 2nd place
Fourth grader won 3rd place
One fourth grader received Honorable Mention.

Contra Costa County Spelling Bee: Seventh grader placed 8th out of 108 contestants.

SCIENCE SCHOLARS

National Science League: Oone eighth grade and one sixth grade student, scored a perfect score.  Our Grade 8 Team placed 8th out of 320 teams (3200 students in grades 7, 8, or 9) in Physical Science; Grade 7 Team placed 4th out of 360 teams (3600 students in grades 7 or 8) in Life Science; Grade 6 Team placed 3rd out of 521 teams (5210 students in grade 6) in Earth Science.

National Science League Teams:  One eighth grade student obtained a perfect score on the test; eighth grade team finished 6th out of 215 schools; seventh grade team finished 5th out of 215 schools; sixth grade team finished 15th out of 330 schools; fifth grade team placed 14th out of 330 schools.
Spring 2008

Sandia Lab’s Bay Area Science Bowl:  Team One finished 5th out of 20 schools; Team Two finished 12th out of 20 schools.

FUTURE STATESMEN

East Bay Debate League Championship:  Our team, consisting of two grade 6 students and one grade 7 student, went 4-0 and came in 2nd place overall.  They went on, as one of two teams representing the East Bay Debate League, to the National Debate League Championship at Claremont McKenna on June 5, where they took 8th place.  One grade 7 student won a trophy for individual speaker points, competing against over 150 contestants in the East Bay Debate League Championship.
Spring 2010

Middle School Public Debate Program National Championship:  Grade 8 students placed 1st and 2nd in Speaker Points.  Our team of two Grade 8 students and one Grade 7 student placed 15th out of 69 teams.
Spring 2009

Parliamentary Debate at Diablo Valley College:  One team comprised of one Grade 8 student and one Grade 7 student took top honors winning all four debates against four high school teams.

San Ramon Valley Unified School District 33rd Annual Speech Contest:  One seventh grade student and one eighth grade student finished in third place in their respective grade levels.

CHECKMATES

Berkeley Chess School 9th annual Tournament for Central and South Contra Costa Counties:  The team consisting of students from our 2nd through 5th grades finished third out of twenty-nine schools.

Out of 86 contestants, one fifth grader finished in 16th place; two 4th graders finished in 18th & 19th place; one 2nd graders finished in 22nd place; one 3rd grader finished in 24th place.

ATHLETIC PROWESS

Dorris-Eaton girls’ 8th grade volleyball team finished the season undefeated.

Dorris-Eaton girls’ 8th grade volleyball team finished the season undefeated.

Dorris-Eaton girls’ 7th grade volleyball team finished the season undefeated and first in the league.

Dorris-Eaton boys’ football team won the league for the 13th time.
Fall 2007

Dorris-Eaton girls’ 8th grade basketball team, which included three 6th grade starters, finished third in the league.

THE JOHN HOPKINS UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR TALENTED YOUTH

One 3rd grader and one 5th grader received High Honors for SCAT State Awards.  One 5th grader took Second Place in Quantitative Math. Three 7th graders and five 8th graders received High Honors for SAT/ACT State Awards.

GEOGRAPHY

One eighth grade student placed in the top 100 in the state for the National Geography Bee.
